Most everyone is familiar with the idea of an inner critic. The inner critic is a voice that criticizes us, whether when looking in the mirror, when at work, or even when thinking of our closest relationships. This occurs because people are divided internally between an inner self that is goal-directed and another one that is critical and self-denying. It is usually formed from early experiences in which we internalize hurtful experiences that are directed at us. Even though this negative aspect has been adopted, it is possible to isolate the critical voice and improve our outlook.
