About one third of those diagnosed will attempt to commit suicide and 10% will kill themselves within twenty years of diagnosis. Very few of them will reveal their intentions to anyone. Schizophrenia causes an impairment in those suffering from it that affects their ability to rationally evaluate their surroundings and interactions, leading to delusions and hallucinations that mirror the distortions in their ability to interpret reality. Their resulting behavior may seem bizarre but is consistent with their abnormal perceptions.
