Some people choose to “tough things out” when they’re feeling down, weary, or depressed rather than seek medical attention. While some people may look at this trait as admirable, Dr. Clifford Lazarus sees it simply as unnecessary and prolonged suffering, as well as missed opportunities to feel better sooner and possibly learn something about themselves in the process. It is particularly concerning when people don’t seek help when they are fatigued, down in the dumps, or have trouble moving, sleeping, or finding enjoyment in previously pleasurable activities. It’s worse if there are mood swings or thoughts of death. These symptoms can be caused by metabolic conditions that need treatment.
