Dr. Robert Firestone made the link between suicide and a destructive inner voice in 1986 after interviewing a woman who had recently attempted suicide. She described how the voice had goaded and instructed her through the suicide attempt. Since then, the inner voice has been identified in suicide attempts across the world. Robert Firestone and his daughter, Dr. Lisa Firestone, collaborated to create the Firestone Assessment of Self-Destructive Thoughts (FAST) scale to determine self-destructive tendencies in a patient and later the Firestone Assessment of Suicidal Intent (FASI) scale. The FAST scale was used in a 2001 study of both Pakistani and American psychiatric patients and showed a high correlation between self-destructive thoughts and suicide attempts.
